Raised on a family farm in West Tennessee, STEVE RUSSELL estimates that he picked 150,000 ears of sweet corn (and ate nearly that much) before he traded his hoe for a reporter’s notebook. After stints with alternative newspapers and magazines in Memphis and New Orleans, he held executive editor positions with Maxim and Playboy before feeling compelled to return far enough south that biscuits are customarily served with breakfast. He has since been a regular contributor to Life, Men’s Journal, Rolling Stone, Best Life, and other national magazines, while also getting in touch with his roots by delving into the sustainable agriculture movement around Charlottesville, Virginia. Steve is a lifetime member of the Rivanna Trails Foundation, and a workshare member of a Charlottesville-based CSA. And he still craves fresh, local sweet corn every summer.
